Questo sito era nato in origine come supporto al Comitato per Karl Guillen, il nostro amico che nel 1999 era detenuto nel braccio della morte dell'Arizona (ora per fortuna non più condannato a morte e non più in isolamento ma in un carcere normale, che lascerà comunque solo nel 2013). Dopo qualche anno abbiamo lasciato il Comitato e abbiamo avviato questo nuovo sito per conto nostro. Attraverso la nostra amicizia con Karl ci siamo addentrati nella realtà carceraria, e non solo statunitense ma mondiale. Abbiamo scoperto che carcere, pena di morte e diritti umani sono argomenti strettamente correlati e che riguardano tutti noi. Sopratutto i diritti umani. Il diritto di tutti noi ad una vita dignitosa comprende una incredibile quantità di aspetti diversi a volte difficilmente valutabili. E comprende il concetto di democrazia: un rapporto equilibrato fra cittadini e governanti che devono essere i nostri reali rappresentanti e non una ristretta cerchia di priviligiati che vivono una realtà a parte e pensano solo ai loro interessi.
La vita non è fatta a compartimenti stagni per cui abbiamo capito che il nostro nuovo sito non poteva parlare solo di Karl ma doveva spaziare. E' andato ampliandosi, fino a toccare argomenti che, a prima vista, non hanno nulla a che fare con i diritti umani, tanto meno con il carcere e la pena di morte. E invece è tutto collegato.
A volte siamo spaventati dalla quantità di argomenti da trattare ma per ora resistiamo perché, sopratutto di questi tempi, è importante una informazione alternativa e indipendente. Speriamo che ci lascino la possibilità di esprimerci e di non essere troppo lacunosi. Speriamo che questo sito non sia troppo difficile da navigare e che questa mappa vi aiuti nella consultazione. This site was firstly born to support our friend Karl Guillen, locked in the Arizona death row in 1999 (now, luckily, he's no longer in the death row, he's no longer in a supermax. He's in a normal prison till 2013). After some years we left the Committee and started this new site by ourselves. Knowing better Karl's reality we came to know all the prison reality, and not only in USA but all over the world. We realised that prison, death penalty and human rights are strictly bound and involve all of us. Most of all human rights.
The right of everyone of us to a decent life includes an incredible amount of different aspects, sometimes hard to understand. It includes also the concept of democracy: a balanced relationship between citizens and their rulers who must be real representatives and not a limited circle of privileged people living a reality apart and minding just their business.
 Life is not made of watertight compartments so we realised our site couldn't keep on talking just about Karl. It grew wider and wider till touching questions that apparently don't deal with human rights, the less with prison and death penalty. Instead it's all bound. Sometimes we are worried by the big amount of topics we must talk about but we won't give up because, above all these days, an alternative and independent information is important. Hopefully they'll let us free to write.
