Logo Amnesty USA 1. Mexican Authorities Fail to Address Violence Against Women. Sign Petition! (It'll be closed on 31.12.03) http://www.care2.com/go/z/9674/1044
Since 1993, over 370 women have been killed or have "disappeared" in Ciudad Ju"rez and Chihuahua, Mexico. To date, the Mexican authorities have been slow to act in response to the horrifying pattern of violence that has become commonplace. The International Community is gravely concerned about the safety of the women of
Chihuahua. Please join Amnesty International in its efforts to persuade the Mexican authorities to take action now before the lives of any more women are lost. Sign this petition to the Mexican Ambassador to the United States. The message must be clear: violence against women must be tackled at its roots. All instances of it must be thoroughly investigated, those responsible brought to justice, and steps must be taken to address the causes of women's vulnerability to violence.

2. Indigenous community threatened in the Amazon - Sign Petition! http://www.care2.com/go/z/9678/1053

On December 4, 2003, 32 members of the Amazon community of Sarayaku were injured and unlawfully detained while mobilizing for a peaceful protest against oil development in their territory. Please send an email to Ecuadorian President Lucio Gutiérrez asking him to protect the human rights of the Sarayaku community and its environment. The Sarayaku people need your help to resist oil development in the Amazon! Sarayaku is a Kichwa community in the Ecuadorian Amazon that is fighting for its very existence against the specter of oil exploration in its territory. Having seen the deforestation, contamination and cultural destruction of Amazonian communities elsewhere in Ecuador, Sarayaku has taken a firm stand in favor of their environmental and cultural rights, and against oil activities in its territories. This position has led to threats and retaliation by oil workers in neighboring communities. Sarayaku community members cannot travel safely on their river and cannot walk safely in their forests. They are enduring a de facto medicine embargo on their community. Please join EarthRights International in defending the rights and
environment of the Sarayaku people. Sign the petition today! http://www.care2.com/go/z/9678/1053

Imagine a world with no death penalty WORLD DAY AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY:
OCTOBER 10, 2003

USA: Oct. 6, 2003

Dear friends,
please join Amnesty International activists and death penalty abolitionists around the world in

observing the first ever World Day Against the Death Penalty: October 10, 2003. Sponsored by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, of which AI is a member, this event has been designed to reinforce and strengthen the international movement for the universal abolition of the death penalty. Throughout the world, non-governmental organizations, students and teachers, lawyers and judges, local representatives, religious organizations, artists, journalists, and citizens have prepared local initiatives for October 10, 2003. You, too, can participate in the World Day by adding your name to the "Appeal to the Authorities of All Countries that Still Retain the Death Penalty".
To sign the appeal, please visit the Amnesty International USA website at this address:
http://takeaction.amnestyusa.org/petition/Index.asp?id=11 or go to the Online Action Center, via the link Act!
While we aim to collect as many signatures as possible by October 10, the petition will remain open until October 20.

Many thanks for your support!
Sincerely,

KATSINA, Nigeria (CNN) - An appeals court has freed a Nigerian mother sentenced to death by stoning for adultery.

Sister Marie de Lourdes Nassauer The idea of the state killing a healthy human being is appalling. Pope John Paul II has said, "The dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.
I renew the appeal for a consensus to end the death penalty, which is both cruel and unnecessary."

4.9.03 From our friend Karl:
100'S OF DEATH PENALTIES WERE OVERTURNED IN ARIZONA, IDAHO, AND WASHINGTON:
100's of death penalties have been overturned in Arizona, Idaho, and Washington, by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The reason they were overturned is because the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling in RING and in APPRENDI, which basically stated that a JURY MUST FIND THE PERSON GUILTY OF THE CRIME, or FACTORS that could enhance the penalty OVER THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE PENALTY. Because the 9th Circuit considered this a "SUBSTANTIVE" (a fundamental change in the law) change, not a "PROCEDURAL" change, the law must be retroactive (applies to all prior sentences). Yes, ARIZONA GOVERNMENT/PRISON are all crying and sniveling, and they will appeal, so it will be up to the U.S. Supreme Court.

25.6.93 Do you remember Roger Murray (Arizona Death Row)? He's a friend of us and asked to help him promote his brother's book. His brother is Robert Murray and is on the Arizona death row as well. We transcript here below the flyer he sent us:

A DEATH PENALTY EXPERIENCE
This is the real stuff, not a super-natural fantasy. Real people die here. Lives on all sides are eternally changed, disrupted, damaged and destroyed. Death is brutal and absolute. The death penalty is a matter of grave importance. The majority of the general public sanction executions but have no real knowledge of the subject and never fully consider the issue.
LIFE ON DEATH ROW presents an informed, thought-provoking look at the inside of capital punishment and the actuality of its effects on real people. It covers many aspects of the death penalty system from a prisoner's point of view. This book offers the opportunity to observe the events and circumstances from a front line position. It is a compelling story about serious matters, addressing areas of controversy, concern and curiosity. It offers a first hand account of the process and life in prison. And it provides insight into the politics and the legalities of the execution protocol. The author, Robert W. Murray is a nationally published writer and, as a prisoner on death row in Arizona, he is uniquely situated to share his personal experiences:
LIFE ON DEATH ROW by Robert Murray is available in 6x9 book size, soft cover, 320 pages, for $19.50 plus S&H.
ISBN: 1-4033-8974-8. It may be ordered from 1st Books Library, Book Order Hotline at 1-888-280-7715, or on Internet at

Candle burning in the dark
NEWS FROM THE DEATH ROW IN USA
Kia Levoy Johnson (m), black, aged 39, was executed in Texas on the evening of 11 June 2003. He was sentenced to death in February 1995 for the murder in 1993 of William Rains, a 32-year-old white man who was shot during a robbery of the shop in San Antonio where he worked as a night manager. The appeal courts refused to stay the execution on the grounds of evidence that Kia Johnson may have had mental retardation.
Calvin Burdine, who once came within minutes of being executed but won a new trial because his lawyer slept through portions of his trial, accepted an plea bargain from prosecutors that will keep him off death row. Burdine, 50, pleaded guilty to three charges. He will receive consecutive life sentences for each ones.
Kentucky Gov. Paul Patton commuted Kevin Stanford's sentence because he was 17 at the time of his crime. Asked by a reporter if he planned to commute any death sentences, Patton said he will act to "correct an injustice " — the sentencing of a juvenile to death — and cited Stanford's case. Patton said he would decide later the terms of Stanford's commutation — whether it will be to life without parole, which would guarantee he never will be released from prison, or to a lesser sentence that might make him eligible for parole.
Ricky Lynn Lewis - Texas - got all his appeals denied and the Judge set Aug. 7 as execution date.
Another case (not in the death row yet very serious) within our petitions, is Patrick Swiney's, a life prisoner in Donaldson prison (Alabama), suffering from serious heart disease. In prison he has been denied the simplest humane medical care, moreover he is abused by the guards and the warden Stephen Bullard. His wife, Sherry Swiney asked the warden to move Patrick to a geriatric cell block, and filed a petition that collected many signatures, ours too. But the warden denied arbitrarily, and is threatening Patrick, and his wife, with retaliation. The irony is that Patrick will soon be proven innocent of the double murder for which he was convicted. He is mounting a strong appeal based on new evidence, and it would be reprehensible to allow an arguably innocent man to die in prison due to indifference and personal animus. His wife Sherry, after the petition, is writing to press and human rights organizations.
We do actually wish her, who's fighting with disperate bravery, to manage to save her beloved husband's life.

La Spezia, June 2nd, 2003

Dearest friends,
I have been in epistolary correspondence with many prisoners of the "Texas death row", Polunsky Unit for many years. For this reason in Italy I established a little association called "S.O.S. from the death row" with the aim to put the prisoners in touch with free people outside: this way, I met many friends, and the inmates have the chance to get their cases known also outside the walls of the jail. Only through a correspondence people can have their material and spiritual needs known.
See you soon. Mauro.

Illinois Governor Ryan Aaron Patterson Justice: Denied - The Magazine for the Wrongly Convicted
Illinois Governor George Ryan Pardoned Four Innocent Men Condemned to Death On January 10, 2003, and the Next Day He Cleared Illinois' Death Row
By Hans Sherrer, Justice Denied Special Correspondent

January 30, 2003

Illinois Governor George Ryan did the unthinkable on January 10, 2003 when he pardoned four men on Illinois' death row who had been tortured by the police into giving false confessions. A day later Gov. Ryan again did the unthinkable when he commuted to life in prison or a lesser terms of imprisonment, the remaining 167
Illinois prisoners sentenced to death. (Webmaster's note: Aaron Patterson, see photo above, is one of the four pardoned inmates. A while ago we put a petition for a new fair trial for him on our petition page, but luckily his nightmare is over now.)
